Famous places in the province of Alicante
On the Costa Blanca you will find not only beautiful beaches, but also many towns and villages worth seeing and also beautiful nature reserves.
Isla de Tabarca
From the town of Santa Pola you can make a trip to the island of Tabarca. It is a relatively flat island that can be divided into two parts: the El Campo and the settlement. El Campo is a stony, treeless terrain called the countryside. The settlement dates back to the 18th century and was commissioned by Carlos the III to keep pirates off the island. As a result, the settlement is completely walled in with three monumental city gates and has a chequered pattern. Swimming and snorkelling are common on Tabarca, but you can also discover Roman discoveries, such as the recently uncovered fish salting plant.
Las Salinas de Torrevieja
Las Salinas de Torrevieja is a natural park near Alicante in the town of Torrevieja. They are salt lakes that have recently been opened to the public. The Las Salinas de Torrevieja are the largest salt mines in Europe. The lakes can be reached on foot or by train, which has been specially developed for tourists. During your visit, you may touch the pink-coloured salt water and stand in the water. Another highlight of a visit to the salt mine is that you have access to the observation tower, which is built on an 8000-tonne salt mountain. From the watchtower you have a beautiful view over the Las Salinas de Torrevieja.
Huerto Del Cura Jardin Artistico Nacional (Elche)
The Huerto Del Cura is located in the city of Elche and is a national artistic garden. The garden is located in the centre of the city, where you can enjoy the tranquillity and admire different species of coexisting flora. The Huerto Del Cura is especially known for its grove of palm trees and its many ponds. The most famous tree is the imperial palm tree, which is already 180 years old. In 1943, the Huerto Del Cura was declared a national artistic garden.
Guadalest valley
El Castell de Guadalest is a village located above the Guadalest Valley. The village is situated in beautiful surroundings with many orange and lemon trees, pine trees and olive trees. Guadalest was built by the Moors and they built an irrigation system whereby the river was dammed in several places. This allowed the creation of the lake in the Guadalest valley. In Guadalest you will find a medieval castle, which can be reached via the famous Ordunas mansion, which now houses a museum. The historical centre of Guadalest can be reached through a tunnel cut into the rock. In the centre you will find craft shops and a number of smaller museums.
Las Fuentes del Algar
Las Fuentes del Algar is a waterfall complex surrounded by beautiful nature. Between Benidorm and Altea, you will find these waterfalls near the village of Callossa d'en Sarria. Here you can make a lovely walk and even swim in the fresh water of the Las Fuentes del Algar. The rocks are arranged gradually next to each other, causing the water to flow violently in steps to the large lakes below. The Las Fuentes del Algar have been declared a nature reserve. Due to the mountainous surroundings and the rocky bottom of the lakes, good footwear is recommended.
